People love the happy tingly feeling they get in their privates when the hit that little red button on the NOS trigger. But what does this mystery giggle gas do? and what is that sweet smelling stuff that makes you laugh so hard that you piss your pants?
Put simply its an oxide. Nitrogen Oxide. It burns rather well and hot
Well it serves mutiple purposes. One is that it drops the air charge as it enters the clyinder. as we learned before cooler air= more power. And it helps to break apart the gas molecules(hey im no chemist but i know what it does). But how do you take advantage of all the power in there?Oh and by the way its one of the cheapest ways to add power to your rig.
Well theres a few methods its added into your fuel air charge. One is method is a Wet injection this usually invoves injectiong the NOS with the fuel in the carberator or the EFI system. Another is the dry witch is a system that injects after the EFI or carb. Then theres the direct port system, This injects NOS directly into the ports.Pretty cool aint it? Carbs often have a plate mounted under them that acts as a spray bar spraying NOS into the fuel as it passes through the intake manifold.
OK so now I have that installed now what? Well you should get a bottle heater. Its been proven having a stable tank temp will add to more power. Now your thinking "if i heat it its gonna get runny and not give me as much oophf" Well thats completly wrong.Ysee for reasons unkown to me the NOS actually congeals a bit and thickens up.This is a good thing.
Ok Ive got that heater on now what?I want more power. Well now the purge kit. All this really does is purge the system from NOS that isnt ready to be used(the foggy stuff, like watery NOS) and compressed air. Install this and viola a complete NOS setup for under 600 bucks.
Oh and btw to prevent dets run 93 octane or better fuel.
Wanna take full advantage of this new power? Keep reading.
Why not delve a little bit into you engine and look at all the little widgets and gizmos and thigamabobs in there. To take full advantage of a NOS setup you want a better flowing intake manifold.(Im going top down).Tunnel ram styles and (I call em this) Skyscraper intakes work very well for this because they atomize the fuel air nos charge.Tunnels can beused in the EFI/TBI systems But Im a carb guy. I dont do the electronic thingys that zap me. Moving down off the intake you have the head(s).Youll want your exaust to flow better if you want to make the most power off this setup. Like in the 230-300CFM range.Intake should be in the 250s.BUT Port size should be relative for the engine size. Thats pletny for a 383.Thats just the ports. For the valves you should upgrade to stainless steel units to prevent melting. Youll want to get a new cam to handle it. But the question is do you want to make the power on or off the bottle? Lunati and COMP CAMS make exellent cams(I love Lunatis personally, had one in my old truck). Now to go with that bumpstick youll want new lifters(unless yours are in good shape or your cam came with them, read the manual dammit!).To compliment them add Chromoly pushrods and a set of stronger rockers. Ok these are all in now and moving to the block itself. Youll want some tougher pistons if there gonna handle those big shots(like 500+).But while you have the heads off might as well check around and look at everything. If you suspect anythign while you are doing this REPLACE it. Better safe then sorry. Now youll want tough conrods and crank to handle the oophf if youre building a bottle motor.
Now I have all these go fast things under my hood. Now what? Well now its all the fun tuning. This is all almost trial and error.Carb guys have the advantage. For the most parts. In cooler climates(like up north) you run the risk of carb icing.Thats bad.We dont want that.Carb icing is when water vapor freezes on contact with the cold carb causing it to freeze more. This in turn turns your gas into a nasty NOS/Gas slurry that has to be cleaned out(with fresh gas). Fuel injections need all sorts of computer bsing. But in either case youll wanna retard your timing a few degrees to take full advantage of that.
Alright you have that tuned. But I want more power to give me that orgasm while driving. Well cars are like people.YOu caress it and spoil it and itll give you an orgy when you drive.Cars are like people in that breathing better is a good thing.Stock exausts and intakes are like those asma kids or the people who smoke one too many cigs. They suck and blow horribly.(kinda like Monica Lewinski) Replace that intake with a cold air kit or a high flow filter(this depends on your setup. Carbs can be setup to run on a CA setup. It just takes patience and some spit and shoelace). Now that the motor is breathing a bit better in lets let it blow a bit better out. Depending on how much cabbage you got to spend you can go all out and get tuned headers or just a catback exaust or the exotic full systems. Its your choice. But youll wanna avoid glass packs and anything with fiberglass. Its gonna burn and smell bad.Turbo style mufflers is where you wanna go for the flow. As well a high flow cat.
There ya go if you think i need to as more post it and ill add!
